Kathmandu, Nepal

Today we were delivered from our orderly plane flight into the beautifully chaotic streets of Kathmandu.  The Kathmandu Guest House, where we're staying ($16/night) is in the middle of the action in the Thamel section of town.  The motorbikes, cars, bikes and people all share incredibly narrow drives and somehow coexist completely non- aggressively...as long as they can express themselves through the liberal use of the horn.  I think they drive on the left side of the road here but mostly they just drive on the least occupied part of the road.  It's crazy and fun, I had a big smile on my face the entire way from the airport.  After arriving we strolled (dodged) through the streets and ally ways and started talking to people about our Porter/Guides for the Annapurna Circuit trek that we're planning to begin the day after tomorrow. The trek lasts 16-18 days, will go around some 8k meter peaks and has a pass at about 17,500 feet.  We'll start in Besisahar and finish in Naya Pul.  The second half of the trek covers the Jomsom Trek to make the route an "n" shape.  We have 30 days in Nepal before flying back to Bangkok so we should have about 10 days after the trek.  There's plenty to do and we've been thinking about a rafting trip except there is a pretty big drought here so water levels are down and the options are limited.  We'll finalize our guide/porter(s) tomorrow, get our permits, bus tickets etc.

Great shot of the chaos. Have a great trek! Don't eat the yellow snow.
